MUTEK Montréal is Primed for Edition 19
Now firmly planted in the verdant, deep of summer, MUTEK Montréal bursts into bloom with its 19th edition, running August 22 to 26 in the heart of downtown. Since its inception the festival has privileged the presentation of live electronic music and audiovisual performances, underlining the immediacy and ingenuity of contemporary artistic practices that intersect with technology. This edition adds another focus—women in digital arts and electronic music—with a significant representation of female artists in the performance program, along with a special two-day symposium.
Renowned for its exceptional presentation standards and a curatorial approach that draws equally from international and national talent, always aiming to deliver revelation and discovery to festival-goers, MUTEK Montréal continues to operate in a human-scale, community-minded context.

Keychange :: Amplify
At the heart of this edition, MUTEK highlights women in digital arts and electronic music in both the regular performance program and during a free 2-day symposium taking place August 21 and 22 at the Monument-National.
Inspired by our membership as one of the core festivals in the PRS Foundation led Keychangeinitiative, and with the support of the British Council’s Amplify project, the festival connects women creators and innovators from Canada, the UK, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela and the EU under the umbrella: Keychange :: Amplify.
Dedicated to empowering women in digital arts and electronic music in order to enlighten, embolden and contribute to the current cultural shift around inclusivity and gender issues, participating artists and innovators will engage in a series of discursive activities, workshops, and performances.

About Keychange
Keychange is a pioneering international initiative which empowers women to transform the future of music and encourages festivals to achieve a 50:50 gender balance by 2022. 60 emerging artists and innovators from across Europe will be invited to international festivals to take part in a series of showcases, collaborations and a programme of creative labs. Backed up by an innovation fund for the network to test new projects and ideas, Keychange aims to accelerate change and create a better more inclusive music industry for present and future generations.
Keychange is led by PRS Foundation, supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, in partnership with Musikcentrum Öst, Reeperbahn Festival, Iceland Airwaves, BIME, Tallinn Music Week, Way Out West, Liverpool Sound City and MUTEK.
About Amplify
Amplify is an ambitious initiative that connects an active network of women-identified artists and curators working in the digital arts, VR, AR, and immersive storytelling sectors in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and the UK. The Amplify network builds on existing links in the Americas and the UK while increasing a South to North conversation in order to strengthen opportunities for artists and curators in an increasingly international environment. Connecting different cultures and experiences, the network activates a platform for dialogues on access, inclusion and gender equality between local and international industry professionals.
Amplify will first take place during MUTEK Montréal but throughout the year many of the artists and curators involved in this project will embark on a transcontinental circulation that will continue in Buenos Aires and Mexico City, finally reconnecting in London at Somerset House Studios.
Amplify is led by the British Council, MUTEK and Somerset House Studios, with the support of Canada Council for the Arts.

Diversités project / Talk with Mexican Artists at MUTEK
Diversités is a cultural exchange project between the festivals MUTEK.MX in Mexico City and MUTEK Montreal that enhances emerging and innovative artistic voices and promotes diversity in digital arts and electronic music festival programming.
After the participation of four artists from Quebec at the 14th edition of MUTEK Mexico in November 2017, we welcome four Mexican artists to the 19th edition of MUTEK Montréal:

Besides their participation in the artistic program, these artists are also included in the Keychange :: Amplify project, which offers a range of additional activities to a cohort of creative and innovative talent.
In addition, on Saturday, August 25, from 3pm to 5pm, an artist talk will be held at the Instituto Cultural de México in Montreal (ICMM).

The Diversités project will continue in November with the participation of four artists from Quebec at the 15th edition of MUTEK Mexico.
Diversités is carried out within the framework of the Groupe de travail Québec-Mexique (GTQM) with the support of Agencia Mexicana de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo, Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores, Consulado General de México in Montreal and the Government of Quebec.
MUTEK MATCH: Attending Professionals
Every year MUTEK attracts a large and diverse crowd of music and digital arts professionals from all over the world who come to Montréal to scout artists for their own programs, meet their peers, network and develop new partnerships. The festival plays an important role in its local, national and international artistic ecosystem by supporting and aiming to develop the careers of the artists it presents, while consciously nurturing all kinds of professional relationships.
MUTEK’s 2018 professional program is presented with the financial support of FACTOR, the Government of Canada and of Canada’s private radio broadcasters, Musicaction and the Government of Québec.

Renewing the festival’s long running relationship with Red Bull Music, this year takes the collaboration into new territory. Literally. Sunday afternoon, MUTEK moves uptown to Outremont to the Virage with a free outdoor program that nods to the richness of Montréal’s local scene:

Behind the regular Never Apart noise and ambient meditation Practice series, Jann Tomaro will be joined by Mikael Tobias to embody a spirit of deep listening and open the day with their transportive sound work; performing live in techno duo LADA during the festival, Dasha Rushreleases her moody, textural ambient personality; local artist Skinnybones, associated with the Knife & Fork Crew performs his eccentric range of styles; susy.technology member, visual artist and sound designer Teo Zamudio takes over with his brooding and balearic grooves; LIP founder and queer party protagonist Frankie Teardrop delivers one of her electric DJ sets; LAGOM collective representative and scene busy bee softcoresoft gives a live set of her acid-laced techno—and Vancouver punk-technoists Minimal Violence complete the open air adventure.
AKOUSMA
First partnership with AKOUSMA, the immersive digital music festival, Saturday August 25th at The Amphithéâtre du Gesù. This program was curated by AKOUSMA's artistic director, Louis Dufort. It features acousmatic performances by Ana Dall'Ara Majek (FR/CA/QC), Lawrence English (AU), Monique Jean (CA/QC) and Roger Tellier-Craig (CA/QC).
The Radical Listener: Field Recording & Listening Workshop
Lawrence English invites a small group of participants to undertake a more detailed examination of field recording and participate in a field trip with him. The workshop lasts approximately 2 hours and includes an examination of technical and aesthetic considerations when approaching field recordings. It also examines the role of listening in how field recordings are constructed, executed and ultimately shared with others. In order to participate in the workshop, participants are obliged to take part in The Radical Listener Masterclass with Lawrence English on August 24, 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
